The Union Hits No.1 on Netflix, But Faces Harsh Criticism
Netflix’s newest action-comedy The Union has skyrocketed to the top of the platform in the UK since its release on 16 August. The film has outpaced major titles, including US Marshals (1998) and Kingsman: The Secret Service (2021).
The Union features Mark Wahlberg as Mike, a construction worker from New Jersey who gets entangled in the high-stakes world of espionage when his former high school love, Roxanne (played by Halle Berry), recruits him for a dangerous mission with US intelligence.
However, despite its No. 1 ranking, the film has received mostly negative feedback from viewers. While a few have praised the “fun” storyline and the “great chemistry” between Wahlberg, 53, and Berry, 58, many have called the film “generic” and “cheesy.” One user on X (formerly Twitter) even commented, “Movies should make us feel something, so full marks to The Union for generating boredom and depression.”
Despite mixed reviews, the film’s ability to rise to the top of Netflix’s charts shows its appeal to a broad audience looking for lighthearted entertainment. Whether The Union continues to hold its place as the most-watched film remains to be seen, but its current position speaks to its intrigue among action-comedy fans.
